Fish Skin Tanning & Leather Crafting
Join us to learn the skill of turning a fish skin into leather then a useful pouch.
Course Description
During this 1 day course we will explore how our ancestors and indigenous tribes have prepared animal skins to turn them into functional leather.
The focus of this course is to develop your understanding of tanning processes including bark tanning, working at each stage of the process to see how leather is made. Working with tanned skins that you will soften before making those skins into a pouch.
Part of this course will also include fibre craft, making use of different natural fibres that can be used to stitch your leather pouch. Bone carving will also be a part of this course in order to produce buttons and toggles.
By the end of the day students should expect to go home with a lovely tanned salmon skin pouch and a solid foundation of knowledge regarding hide tanning.
Subjects Covered
Tanning: the process or turning an animal skin into functional leather. The different natural materials that can be used, what you need to achieve it and how long it can take.
Perpetration: of the animal skin, bet it mammal or fish. What you need to do it and how .
Working: you will be guided through the process of working the skin to dry and soften it.
Making: you will be guided through creating a pouch from the leather you have made.
Creating: natural cordage to enable you to stitch your pouch together.
Bone carving: to create a toggle or button to close your pouch with.
Notes:
We will provide hot drinks throughout the session, you will just need to bring a mug.
The course is being held in a woodland environment so suitable outdoor clothing & footwear are recommended.
